Starting a new job in an office can come with its fair share of headaches. You have to get used to a whole new cast of people, a completely different working environment and choosing the most appropriate attire that will make your colleagues respect you. Remember to work hard and play even harder. Ever just wanted to play?

To simplify things a little for those first-day jitters we’ve come up with a couple of tips to make your office wardrobe give you that future Boss Lady look instead of a walking fashion disaster.

Suits

Every businesswoman worth her salt has at least one suit in her wardrobe. The “power suit” as it’s often known will always set you out from the rest as a serious competitor, but with so many styles and options out there, it’s easy to make mistakes.

You don’t need to break the bank with your suit or go for a garish full white number. Instead work to a budget to create something casual, yet professional. Ideally, you’re aiming for a blazer with clean lines and basic colours, all-natural fibres are a plus as well.

Shoes

You can never go wrong with a simple pair of sling-back black heels. They’re renowned as a “wear-with-anything” choice of shoe and they will honestly work with whatever you go with. To capitalize on them and look even more professional, why not pair them up with a pinstripe skirt or black pant-suit if you’re aiming for wearing a full suit around the office.

Tops

Tops are potentially the most disastrous of items to wear around the office. The wrong kind of top in an office can absolutely destroy your reputation and leave you sitting by yourself at lunch playing games on sites like Easy Slots instead of chilling with the higher-ups. Our advice is to stay far away from anything with garish patterns or colours.

Go for something with simple, silk blouses are a good jumping off point thanks to their versatility and their ability to be worn pretty much all year round as they never go out of style.

Accessories

Finally, we have the accessories. Like the aforementioned tops above, accessories are a minefield of fashion disasters that if worn will never allow you to be taken seriously in the office ever again. Ideally, you won’t wear any, but if you’re set on matching a top with earrings then we have a few suggestions.

First, stay well away from any big pieces or costume jewellery. Keep things like earrings, bracelets and rings small and conservative. Also, any necklaces you wear should be well away from cleavage, your goal in an office is to not draw the eye at all.

The Verdict

Getting the right look for the office can seem like quite the daunting task, but if you’re really struggling to nail that perfect future Boss Lady look, then stick to a few of our suggestions. If you keep things classy and conservative it won’t be long until you will be the office trend-setter.
