Being A Boss While Keeping The Spark Alive

1 Set aside time each week to spend with your partner

Leading busy career lives can mean even less time for ours personal lives, so setting aside time weekly to spend with that special someone can be an escape from your busy schedule. Designating a day of the week to spend with your partner allows you to plan dedicated quality time. It is best if this rendezvous is away from home to step out of the space where you ordinarily hang out. A change of scenery will put you in a different frame of mind outside of your daily cluttered routine and will be a better platform to meaningfully connect. It is also a great excuse to go for a romantic dinner, although a more cost effective option is a picnic in the park or at the beach. Agreeing on the time amount of time you should spend together each week will also manage your expectations of each other.

2 #NoPhoneZone

When you are spending quality time with your partner, agree for a no phone zone. This rule prevents the temptation to check your work emails and social media. You can then give each other your undivided attention and be truly present in each other’s company.

3 Communicate enough

There isn’t a rule on the amount of time you should speak to your partner daily. It depends on your lifestyle, of course. However, with technology at our fingertips, if there are days where you find yourself only sending your loved one a text goodnight, this is a red flag that you should communicate more often. A morning phone call or even sending your partner an endearing text before work help sets a positive tone for the day and lets them know that you are thinking of them even when you are super busy.

4 Find a hobby to do together

If you need to spend more time with your significant other, find a hobby that you can both indulge in at times of leisure. Choose an activity of mutual interest, or compromise by each participating in something that the other enjoys. An active hobby or an activity that excites you releases endorphins and can strengthen the bond if you are struggling to spend enough time together.

5 Leave work at work

While it is positive to talk to your partner about how things are going at work – keeping them involved in your life, be careful that they do not become an outlet for your stress. Regular venting can create a negative discourse in your interactions. Focus on positive news to share instead.

6 Align on career goals and values

Be honest and upfront of your career ambitions to make sure your partner fully understands your working lifestyle. It is helpful to choose a partner who shares the same career values as you. They will understand the demanding nature of your job or your choice to spend the majority of your time invested in your career. It is difficult to have a successful relationship as a working woman when your partner demands the bulk of your time.

7 Celebrate your success

The most important tip that will ensure a happy and successful relationship is to have a supportive partner. Your partner should be supportive of the type of job you have, the company you choose to work for, the amount of time you decide to invest in your career, the amount of time your need to travel for your job, and whether you may need to move to another city for work or study.  Your partner should also not be intimidated by your success, but celebrate it with you.
