WOT: When and how did you develop a passion for fashion?

FRANCESCA: Ever since I can remember, I have been an extremely creative person. I remember cutting up my mother’s curtains and getting in trouble and making a dress out of them when I was very young, haha. I’ve always wanted to be a fashion designer; I am into everything fashion and beauty. My mother was an interior designer, My father has built things including homes from the ground up. I have been watching people create things my whole life.

WOT: To what do you attribute your success in Fancy By Francesca Watson and how do you define success?

FRANCESCA: Hard work, dedication, persistence, late nights, early mornings and a desire to succeed against all odds. The definition of success is personal, it’s an individual journey to what someone believes makes them successful. Personally, I believe that I am still on the journey to success. When I can work my business full time without working for someone else, then part of my goal will be met.

WOT: What sacrifices have you had to make to start a business in fashion?

FRANCESCA:  I have made many sacrifices for my brand. I have made sacrifices in time and financially.

WOT: Turning your passion into a business, have you always been entrepreneurial?

FRANCESCA: I have always been entrepreneurial. Although I have a 9-5 right now to try and support my goals until I can afford to do this full time, I always tell myself I was not meant to work for anyone else. I was meant to work for myself. I always lead from the front and never follow, I was meant to be a boss.

WOT: What is Fancy By Francesca Watson goals currently?

FRANCESCA:  My goals are to be a global brand, to see my designs on top celebrities, To make a woman look and feel beautiful at any stage in their life, and to be able to work my business full time. I would love to dress celebrities like Tyra Banks, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Mariah Carey Taraji P Henson etc the list goes on!

WOT: Can you describe your clients?

FRANCESCA:  My clients come from many different backgrounds but all for the same reason. They want to look good! Regardless of the occasion, my clients want to look and feel beautiful, confident or sexy. They want something new that they haven’t seen in the store over and over again.

WOT: More and more plus size models are being shown in the fashion world, do you think this is a good idea for the health of younger generation?

FRANCESCA: Yes! I absolutely love this. I am Glad when I see models like Ashley Graham paving a way for us women who are not exactly a size 2. She shows us that you don’t have to be a size 2 to be drop dead GORGEOUS! (and she is!) Plus size models being showcased teaches people that they need to love their selves, showcases REAL women, with REAL bodies! It helps the younger generation that they don’t need to fit the old society’s beauty standards. (“There’s no need to fix what God already put his paint brush on”- J. Cole)

WOT: Tell us about a time when someone disliked your decision of starting your own fashion brand, how did you handle this situation?

FRANCESCA: In life, there will be people who do not believe in you. I don’t put my focus on getting upset with people who are too small minded to see my vision. I continue to put my energy into being better than I was yesterday. I started out making tutus, I look back and some of the first dresses I created was a mess! I was making costumes many people questioned what in the hell am I doing! I didn’t care! I kept going, kept growing, kept learning, kept studying, kept creating, watching tutorials and now I am unstoppable. I am amazed myself at some of my designs and I am excited every time I create. I would have never guessed that I would have my clothing in any music video or on any celebrity and I’m truly glad that I continued to push forward regardless of nay-sayers. You have to believe in yourself Because if you don’t believe in you, no one else is going to. There is always a chance, but when you give up, you lose.

WOT: What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?

FRANCESCA:

Some lessons learned are trusting others word without having a valid contract in place for the exchange of products and services. It’s important that when you are dealing with time and money to put everything on paper, and I’ll leave it at that.

WOT: If you had one piece of advice to our readers to those just starting out as a fashion designer, what would it be?

FRANCESCA: Be hungry for your goals, stay humble. Be a sponge, learn from others, be inspired and never copy.
